In 1976, Stamatisu Moraitis was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he accepted the fact the he would die. He was told by nine different doctors that he has just six more months to live and needs to start with chemotherapy immediately. He refused to undergo this treatment and decided to go back to his birthplace Ikaria in Greece.
At first, he started suffering from depression and he would stay I bed the whole day and his mother and his wife would take care of him. But then, a miracle happened. One day, his will to live amazingly returned, even though he reconciled that he would die. He started living his life vigorously. Every Sunday morning, he would climb the hill to the church, where his grandfather worked as a priest. Also, he received much attention from his friends who had found out that he has returned and they started visiting him. He would spend much of his time talking to them and drinking locally produced wine, two bottles of it each day. He was doing this because he wanted to at least die happy.
In the following months, he started feeling better and stronger. He decided to plant a garden and spend the rest of his days enjoying in it. He wasn’t hoping to see the fruitage, but at least he would enjoy by the sea in the sun breathing fresh air.
After six months, Moraitis was still alive. He was collecting fruits from the garden, he was cleaning the vineyard, walking on the coast, and he even started working in his vineyard. He was waking up early in the morning so that he would be out in the sun during the whole day, working and enjoying. He was feeding on the fruits from the garden he planted. In the evening, he would go to the local bistro and play domino with his friends for some time.
Even after few years, he was still alive, and what is even more important, he was feeling healthy. He even extended his house and added a few more rooms in which started producing his own wine, 1500 liters of it.
30 years later, he turned 97. he went to the doctor’s office for examinations and to see what happened. The doctors that have told him that he had only six months left had all died. He outlived them all, just by not going to chemotherapy that was supposed to prolong his life for a bit. The only thing he did was returning back home, in his birthplace. Moraitis died when he was 102, healthy and happy. The reason for his death was just old age, the cancer, according to the examination results, had disappeared.
The most important thing that should be done when facing a disease is maintaining faith and will, not taking medicines. Another important thing is turning towards nature. That happened to Moraitis: he returned to Ikaria, placed on the Greek coast, a place very close to nature that has plenty of healthy food. People who live there are never sick from cancer or heart diseases, almost never.
People there use olive oil, legumes, carbohydrates, whole wheat grain bread, and different spices including parsley, oregano etc on a daily basis. They eat red meat as rarely as once a week.
Even though we are not very rich, our tables are always full of food and we are hanging out with our friends and family quite often. We don’t live a fast life, we work when we can, sometimes overnight, but we don’t make haste. We don’t watch TV, but instead, we socialize, say the people from the town.
The secret to their healthy life is the fact that they do not rush through life. They eat and drink healthy ingredients, homemade ingredients and they walk every day, up to 20 kilometers. The afternoon is reserved for rest. They socialize and laugh and have fun all the time. They drink homemade wine and consume tea and food that they have grown themselves.
A RECIPE FOR HEALING BASED ON THE LIFE ON IKARIA
Take rest whenever you feel tired. Don’t force your body to be active when it needs sleep. People who take rest in the afternoons for about 5 hours have decreased risk of cardiovascular disease for 35 percent. When you rest, you also reduce the level of the hormone stress.
2. MEDITERRANEAN DIET
Eat homemade, fresh food in great quantities. Lower the amount of meat in your diet, to once a week. Consume grains, seeds and olive oil which are homemade. Try consuming also homemade bread made of whole grains. Besides fruit and vegetables, do not forget to eat fish.
3. DRINK A LOT OF TEA
It has diuretic features and can extract the toxins from the body, if it is naturally grown.
4. BE ACTIVE AND SPEND MORE TIME IN NATURE
Take walks on a regular basis, sit in the sun, and spend time by the sea and in greenery and in the forest. Work, do something and feel useful and complete.
5. DO NOT RUSH AND RELEASE THE STRESS AND THE FEAR FROM YOUR LIFE
Spend time with your family and friends, have fun, laugh, and do not expect anything from life, just enjoy in it. If you can, move to a place that is free of air pollution and smog, to a place where you are not forced to do thing that do you harm. Do not think about pain and other distresses. Live freely, like there is no pain and no stress. Moraitis did this and lived for so long, he even outlived the people who told him he won’t live longer than 6 months.
